Bringing enjoyable fitness programmes to Princes Risborough

Personal fitness in Princes Risborough

I often get asked what kind of personal fitness training I do. The answer is pretty much everything!

My job is to come up with a fitness programme that isn’t about what I like but is about what you like, and there is nothing more rewarding than coming up with a programme that helps you reach your fitness goals and which you love doing! It could be CrossFit, strength training, boxing, circuit training – the list goes on.

But don’t take my word for it!  Let’s take a look at some of the programmes of my clients.

Hannah: the CrossFit queen

Hannah is a bit of a fitness fanatic, but like many of us struggles to find the time to do as much as she wants as life always seems to get in the way. It’s one of the reasons why she chose me as her personal trainer especially as I was based locally in Princes Risborough!

Hannah’s goal was to get back into fitness with the aim of gaining more muscle and losing a bit of weight. We decided CrossFit would be a good choice.

CrossFit is a fitness workout that has become increasingly popular over the last few years. It’s a form of high-intensity interval training that focuses on movements you perform in your day-to-day life, such as squatting, pushing and pulling.  Combining cardio, weights, and resistance training, it builds muscle and burns fat, which was exactly what Hannah was after.

In this session, Hannah’s cardio is skipping and padwork training followed by weight training to build and strengthen muscle. Then finishing with the 5kg ball to work on her core.

If CrossFit is something you’re interested in doing but you are worried it might be too intense, don’t be! Unlike traditional gym workouts, CrossFit doesn’t focus on the number of repetitions you need to do, but rather on the amount of time you spend on them. It’s one of the reasons it appeals to people of all ages and fitness levels as you can tailor and adjust your workouts as you progress.

Monika: boxing clever

Monika also wanted to get fit and was looking for a full-body workout which made boxing a natural choice.

Good for your core and building strength in your shoulders, boxing isn’t just a fantastic cardio exercise, but also one that helps build up overall body strength as well as increasing your stamina and endurance.

And of course, it’s a great stress release. After all, what could be better after a long day at the office or getting stuck in traffic around Princes Risborough, than taking out your frustration on a punch bag?!

Monika had never boxed before, so I started by showing her the boxing stance, basics of footwork and how to throw a punch. Our workouts consisted of a mix of shadow boxing, punch bag and pad work to keep things varied and interesting.

Gio: cardio sessions using the Woodway Curve

I’ve been Gio’s personal trainer for a while now and one of the things he repeatedly says is that I help keep him motivated. And this is partly down to us varying his workout to incorporate weight training and incorporating new gym equipment, such as the Woodway Curve.

Many people mistake the Woodway Curve for a bog-standard treadmill, but they are sorely mistaken. This treadmill is curved and powered solely by your legs which makes it more like outdoor running (without the rain!)

You have to use your legs to get the machine going, which immediately engages more muscle groups, and the only way you can increase your pace is by working harder, rather than just pushing a button.  This also means it’s less harmful on your joints and burns calories faster.

It’s now a firm favourite in Gio’s workout routines.

Sabba: combining exercises to great effect

Sabba’s goal is the same as many of my personal fitness clients – she wants to lose weight and tone up.

As Sabba loves nothing more than trying different things, we decided to mix up her sessions to include skipping, cardio workouts and high-intensity training. We also threw in a bit of strength work, just to keep her on her toes!

Combining different types of training activity is a good way of improving your general fitness and also reduces the risk of injury as you’ll be resting some muscle groups when you are focused on others.  It’s also an excellent option if you get bored easily!

Peter: weight training to improve overall fitness

People often worry that if they lift weights, they will end up looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger, but this is not the case. Yes, heavy weight training will increase the size of your muscles, but as you’ll see from Arnie’s workout routine, you’ll have to do some serious work to get that bulky.

Peter was interested in gaining more muscle so targeted weight sessions was the perfect option. Weight training offers a number of benefits including building muscle, burning body fat, improving heart health as well as strengthening your bones and joints.

In fact, recent research has found you will live longer if you incorporate lifting weights into your exercise routine so it’s good to do no matter what your age.
